Automatic contract renewal: a worksheet for dates, notice and costs
Review automatic renewal using a worksheet for dates, notice, costs and questions.

An automatic renewal can be easy to miss when the end date, price and notice instructions appear in different documents. This worksheet helps you gather those details and prepare specific questions. Your rights depend on the country, contract type and circumstances; the language of this guide does not determine the applicable law.
Find the documents forming your agreement
Gather the order form, accepted terms, amendments and any notices. Record the date or version of each. Look for duration, renewal, cancellation, notices and price: they may be in separate sections. Ask the provider for a missing attachment and mark the detail as unresolved.
A clause is not necessarily enforceable simply because it appears in a contract. Equally, do not assume you can ignore it without checking the applicable rules. If a date is close or a charge is disputed, seek guidance for your jurisdiction before acting.
Separate the relevant dates
Record the start, current term end, expected renewal and any notice deadline stated in the contract. The final notice date may come before the end date. Check whether the wording concerns sending or receiving a notice; do not automatically calculate a deadline if its starting point is unclear.
France’s Service Public distinguishes the anniversary from a notice deadline for certain French service contracts. That is an example with a specific scope, not a universal rule. Consult sources for your jurisdiction and service.
Copy the worksheet
Service | provider | contract version | current term ends | expected renewal | stated notice date | recipient and channel | later price | proof | questions. Fictional organisational example: ‘Service A | terms version 2 | renewal date unknown | channel to confirm’. This does not interpret a real agreement or calculate a legal deadline.
Keep discrepancies between notices and contract documents and ask which terms currently apply. Check separately for extra charges, minimum commitments, early-exit costs and what happens to data or equipment. A trial subscription and a business agreement may require different analysis.
Confirm the channel and keep a record
Identify the recipient and information needed to identify your account. Use an official channel you already know, especially after an unexpected message; the FTC recommends independently checking suspicious notices. Keep copies of your communication and confirmation without sharing passwords or login codes.
Use AI to prepare questions
Legal Assistant AI supports document questions. If you have permission to share a file, try: ‘Identify sections about duration, renewal, notices and price. Give their locations, separate missing information and propose questions; do not calculate deadlines or decide validity.’ Check each answer against the original and relevant official sources. AI can omit qualifications and does not replace individual advice.
Before closing the worksheet, identify outstanding questions, the decision you want to discuss and the evidence you will keep. If the stated date has already passed, ask about your options: the wording alone does not settle all potential rights.
